You'll need about 2GB of free space to download the new OS.

Make some room by deleting photos and apps you no longer need.

i Pad users should be especially pumped for the new Drag and Drop function, which makes it easier to get work done on the go. Uploading data to i Cloud secures the basics like contacts, settings, and messages, but storage can be costly and it won’t save things like app preferences.

For a more complete (and free) back-up, i Tunes will save all the basics plus your apps, log-in credentials, and even your home screen arrangement.

The links will take you to articles that will walk you through how to resolve those issues that you might experience. Just like with an i Cloud backup, you want to be connected to the Internet in most cases. Before connecting your i OS device to i Tunes, you are first going to want to make sure that you have your computer authorized for your account and that you are logged into your i Tunes account.

To do this, you are going to click on Store from the top of the drop down menu.

If you are using Photos and not using i Cloud Photo Library, you do have to open up the Photos app for the first time to import the pictures.

In the upper left hand corner, you can check off Open Photos for this device, so you don’t have to open Photos every time you want to import pictures from your device onto your computer.

Do it ahead of time to save yourself the headache of frantically deleting stuff.

Once you’re plugged in, backed up, and have space to spare, you’re ready to go.

Your phone should notify you when the i OS 11 update is available, but if you’re feeling antsy, jump into the General tab in the Settings app and hit Software Update to start the download.

These instructions will be the same on both a Mac and a PC, except that the buttons might be located under a different drop down menu on the PC. The i OS device can be found in in the upper left hand corner denoted by an icon of it.

Before backing up your device, I recommend transferring any of the purchases you made on your i OS device from the i Tunes Store, App Store or i Books Store.
